Steel Tubing for Your Trailer Rack normally comes in 20' lengths. For the 1.5" square tubing used to make DIY No Weld Trailer Racks, some places will also stock it in 24' lengths.
When purchasing steel at a steel yard / supplier, normally the cost per foot will be less if you purchase a full "stick". Check the full "stick" price verses getting just how much you need. It isn't uncommon to find the per foot cost for a partial length to be double that of the per foot cost when buying a full length of tubing. In many cases, getting some extra, will end up being less expensive.
Here is an example of how to maximize your material usage on a No Weld Rack. For a 4' x 6' utility trailers, you can do Medium Height Cross Bars with one 20' length of 1.5" square tubing. If you make the cross bars 63" wide, which is slightly narrower than the fenders, the upright would end up being 28" tall, leaving an inch or so after cuts.

The Thule Xsporter has a list price of $799 and the Yakima Outdoorsman $507.
If you are the DIY type and receive satisfaction from building things with your own two hands, there is.
The No Weld Trailer Rack System. By putting in some “sweat equity” you can build a trailer rack with our specially designed brackets for well under half the price. For most racks we recommend adding connecting bars between the front and rear hoops which notably stiffens the rack structure.
At the core of the No Weld Trailer Rack System is strong 1.5”, .120” wall square tubing. Then the tubing is joined with our special Corner Connectors and depending on the application, attached to the trailer with our Base Plates.
An average size No Weld Trailer Rack for a Utility Trailer will cost around $200 in materials to build. A Corner Bracket set is $97. In my area 1.5” square tube is $3.35 a feet. Then some bolts, nuts and a can or two of paint. That puts the cost well under half what the Thule or Yakima options run.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying the Thule or Yakima racks are bad products, but if you are mechanically inclined and enjoy building things, I’ve got a better way.

As with Thule racks, you will need crossbars to go with your towers. We designed the towers to use the same 1.5" square tubing as No Weld Racks for crossbars. This keeps the crossbars budget friendly at under $40. The towers were designed with flexibility in mind, so many styles of aluminum crossbars with a bottom channel could be used with them.
The new Trailer Rack Towers are designed as a direct replacement for the Thule rain-gutter style tower we have been using on our Dinoot Trailers. They were also designed to work on Utility Trailers, M416 Trailers and Teardrop trailers for adding lower height side attached trailer racks. Basically any style trailer with a flat side can use these.

The DIY No Weld Trailer Racks Bracket System we introduced earlier this year has proved to be a budget friendly way to build sturdy homemade trailer racks.
The system is based on Corner Connectors used for 90 degree joints and Base Plates for connecting the rack to the trailer. The other key component is 1.5” square tubing. We are also working on new components and accessories to expand the functionality of the trailer rack system. Build the core with two hoops with connector bars to create a solid rack structure.
There are many trailer rack applications that our No Weld Trailer Rack Bracket System can be used for. Racks can be added to many types of trailers and they can be setup to haul many items such as Roof Top Tents, Kayaks, Canoes, Paddle Boards, Bikes, Cargo Carriers, and more.

]]>Here are a few ideas on how you could build one.
Using a Harbor Freight Haul-Master #62645 40.5" x 48" frame kit, I would first stretch the tongue with a piece of 2.5" square tube.
Add reinforcement plates where the tongue bolts to the cross-members is an important step.
Another possibility would be to make the tongue long enough for using a Harbor Freight receiver cargo basket as a front rack
The final piece is the tub kit. Just like a full length M-Series M416 tub kit; you could build it with or without a tailgate. We have done this for the 5' versions. We cut the side panels to the proper length for you before sending them.
Here are the 6' and 5' version M-Series M416 trailer tubs.Prior to their introduction, building a matching Jeep Trailer required cutting and welding old Jeep bodies together, then days of body work. Now, with our tub kits, building a matching Jeep Trailer is a straightforward DIY project.

For me, it’s been like a rebirth from long ago home-built camping trailers people could build using information found in places like Popular Mechanics. We are now the leading how-to experts in building compact camping trailers providing DIYers with construction guides, parts and many sources of information.
The Explorer Box design is inspired by the simplicity of vintage Tent Trailers with some Teardrop Trailer influences. Our “Explorer Box Construction Manual” makes it simple to build a durable plywood based lightweight camping trailer. So a few years ago, we started making a Harbor Freight Smooth Riding Spring Retrofit Kit. These kits have smooth riding springs matched to the loaded weight capacity of DIY Compact Camping Trailers. They have the added benefit of no annoying banging from the factory loose fit slipper style rear spring mounts.

The newest trend is toward lightweight trailers that can be towed behind many cars or small SUVs, opening up RV travel to a new generation, experts say. This year, the RV industry expects to ship 383,000 trailers and 55,000 motor-homes, the eighth consecutive year of growth.
“This is so cute!” Is the familiar exclamation when potential buyers see the smaller, more compact RV's. Our Explorer Box is no exception.
